ABOUT THE CONTEST. To increase awareness of women's ongoing contributions to the mathematical sciences, the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and Math for America are co-sponsoring an essay contest for biographies of contemporary women mathematicians and statisticians in academic, industrial, and government careers. The essays will be based primarily on an interview with a woman.
Essays were judged by a team representing American Baptist Women’s Ministries and American Baptist Home Mission Societies, as well as author Billie Montgomery Cook. “I was pleased with Judson Press’s invitation for American Baptist Women’s Ministries to partner in this essay contest that has empowered young adult women to give voice to the topic of mentors.
Women’s History Month Essay Contest Theme: Nevertheless, We Persisted. Event March 3, 2020 - April 3, 2020. This year’s theme aims to celebrate women who lead efforts to secure the right to vote as part of a larger struggle for equality for all American women. Submissions are due in the English Dept. Step-by-step guidelines to help educators and community groups implement a National Women's History Week essay contest, in which elementary and secondary students write about women, are provided. Students are encouraged to write about a woman they personally know so that they can conduct an oral history interview.
LEARNING TASK AND ESSAY TOPIC: Have students read the essay prompt for their grade level and conduct research based on the 2019 Women’s History Month National Theme: “Visionary Women; Champions of Peace and Nonviolence.” The theme honors women who have ledefforts to end war, violence, and injustice and pioneered the use.
